True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi (A "Top 50 Post")
I must have worn my copy of this novel out as a girl. I liked it so much, I was an adult before I even discovered Avi had written other books. Apparently, I was perfectly satisfied with the one.
Avi manages to bring real life to historical fiction, probably setting me on the path to be the historical fiction reader I've become today.
Also, Charlotte Doyle kicks some butt.
